WEATHER
What to watch
Check the Mount Woodson forecast and City of Poway heat closures. The exposed ascent can be significantly hotter than the early reading at Lake Poway, with little protection from sun or wind.

How the year behaves
Inland San Diego has a dry Mediterranean climate: cool-season rain, warm springs, and hot, arid summers. Heat commonly becomes the route's defining difficulty from late morning onward.
Best season: Cool months and early morningsWATER SOURCE
Carry all water
Developed water may be available near Lake Poway facilities, but there is no dependable water on the climb. Fill before leaving the recreation area and carry the entire hike's supply.

The photo is famous, but the climb is the real story. From Lake Poway the route gains roughly 2,000 feet through chaparral and granite boulder fields, with very little shade and a final summit-area walk to the rock.
ROUTE WALKTHROUGH
What the hike is like
- Begin on the Lake Poway Loop and follow signs for Mount Woodson Trail at the east side of the lake.
- Climb steadily through switchbacks and boulder country toward the Mount Woodson summit area.
- Continue to Potato Chip Rock, wait safely for your turn if there is a line, then return by the same route.
BEFORE YOU DRIVE
Planning the day
- The City of Poway guide lists the Mount Woodson Trail itself as 2.4 miles with about 2,000 feet of gain; the Lake Poway approach adds distance.
- Weekend parking fills early. Check the city's current Lake Poway hours and fee schedule.
- Bring all the water you need. The route is exposed almost from start to finish.
TURN-AROUND JUDGMENT
Safety that matters here
- Poway may close exposed trails during excessive heat. Never route around a heat closure.
- The rock photo requires a scramble and has a drop below it. Skip the pose if it is crowded, windy, wet, or outside your comfort zone.
- Rattlesnakes and loose granite are normal backcountry hazards; watch your footing and hand placement.
