Know the landscape
San Diego hiking changes character quickly as you move inland. Coastal routes offer breezes and sandstone, while foothill climbs rise through boulder fields and sun-exposed chaparral toward wide county views.
Heat is the defining constraint on inland routes. Local agencies may close trails during excessive-heat warnings, and water is rarely available beyond developed parks.
