San Jacinto feels like an island of high mountain forest above the desert. Tram access begins around 8,400 feet, while Idyllwild routes climb through a connected State Park and National Forest wilderness system.
Permits are part of most wilderness days. Altitude, snow, wind, and tram schedules can all change an otherwise straightforward hike into a serious outing.
